A new bible

let me start this most auspicious of blog entries by saying i can smell almost everything
I have had many bibles in my time on this earth and by bible I don’t mean the religious text of first the jews (of whom I am one) and latter the religious text of the Christians I mean the definition of bible numbers 3 and 5
Bible
Bible [bb'l]
(plural Bibles)
n
1. Christian holy book: the sacred book of the Christian religion
2. Jewish holy book: the Hebrew scriptures, the sacred book of the Jewish religion
3. bibleholy book: the holy book of any religion
4. bible (plural bibles) copy of Bible: a copy or edition of the Bible
5. bible (plural bibles) essential book: a book that is considered an authority on a particular subject
Now my bibles in the past have been not the norm most books read by my peers were … well lets just say they weren’t literary master works
My new bible is Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Suskind Before I start telling you why you should go out right now right this second and buy it and read it (and the movie too) I’ll tell you about my other bibles
There is a list catcher in the rye starts the list I read this book and was captivated by it this kid Holden who’s been expelled from school spend a weekend in New York I thought it was going to suck but I read it and I was like wow I was enthralled by his small adventure and his heart
The next two bible’s that hit me were a plays cat on a hot tin roof I had seen the Liz Taylor and Paul Newman film version and thought I’d give the actual play a go I read it in one sitting as you do with plays and loved it I could almost feel the summer heat coming out of it the other play was angels in America I was captivated again by how moving it was and at the same time how funny Harper and Ethel Rosenberg were my fave characters
(after reading AinA I went to an art show it was of Andy Warhol’s work the picture of the electric chair moved me to actual tears (the picture is taken from a newspaper and the image is of the electric chair used to ‘execute’ Ethel and Julius Rosenberg) which is why I was so moved I came to see her as a friend)
The next bible was an odd one it’s called Schott’s original miscellany it’s a book of lists and unusual facts I love it and reference it all the time

The next bible which I read is apart of a ritual I have is dickens a Christmas carol every year I read it then I watch the Muppets Christmas carol then scrooged and any other version I can find I’m sure it’s the most Christian thing I do all year

I’ve read dozens of books many of which have the potential to be bible like : of human bondage, death in Venice, metro, atonement, Mrs Dalloway, Faust and the list gose on but those books are not as interesting to me they don’t hold me the way the ones above hold me (the books above are just a small sample of the bibles I love)

Now on too perfume: a story of a murderer
Concurrently Jean-Baptiste Grenouille is showing me paris on his nose he was born with an amazing olfactory ability I haven’t finished it but I have seen and own the movie and I’m looking forward too it
I’ll probably write an updadte to this post when I’m done
